About Cannabis in PA

Medical marijuana was legalized in Pennsylvania in 2016 by the Medical Marijuana Act, Act 16 of 2016. The Pennsylvania Department of Health’s Office of Medical Marijuana regulates medical marijuana in the Commonwealth.
Since the act was established, the program has gone through some progressive changes:
-- In 2018, medical patients gained access to cannabis flower, but only for vaporizable use and not for smoking.
-- Governor Tom Wolf has pardoned a total of 2,540 cannabis offenses since he took office in 2015.
Currently, a few proposed bills may soon change the Pennsylvania medical cannabis landscape:
-- Senate Bill 538 would expand the program to include edible cannabis medications beyond currently allowed pills, tinctures, and liquids.
-- Senate Bill 1024 would allow medical cannabis patients over 21 to grow up to six plants at home and purchase seeds from licensed dispensaries.
-- Senate Bill 835 aims to remove the list of specific qualifying conditions, allowing doctors to recommend medical cannabis to any patient at their discretion.
Other active initiatives include:
-- Gov. Wolf aims to allow residents to expunge possession charges and decriminalize cannabis possession, but there is no timeline yet.
-- Gov. Wolf wants to expunge past possession charges and decriminalize, though no timeline is set.
